Ballet Mink is back in Copenhagen with a premiere performance of "Transit(ion) Trilogy: Emigration Transformation”, the culmination of the four-year "Transit(ion) trilogy Project”, based on the epic story of the great Eastern European exodus of Jews in the late 1800's, their emigration to America and subsequent integration into mainstream American culture.

The production provides both a performance and educational experience in a multimedia format - engaging professional dancers, historic photography, video and overarching narrative.

The story follows the departure of Jews form Eastern Europe to Ellis Island and the life they found and made as newcomers on the Lower East Side. The performance moves forward focusing on the artistic accomplishments of Jewish immigrants in New York City in the early 20th Century, as seen through the lens of the young novelist and Hollywood scriptwriter Anzia Yezierska, known as Sweatshop Cinderella. In the last scenes, the delineation between the immigrant and the “born American” blurs, and the styles of the dances and musical compositions are wholly a part of American culture.

From emigrant to immigrant to citizen, the journey is truly one of human transformation. In the time span of three generations the transformation is complete.

For Ballet Mink founder and choreographer Margot Mink Colbert, this project differs greatly from her main body of work. As a second generation American herself, she went looking for her roots out of personal curiosity, and found a wealth of material recording individual experiences of immigrants in music, poetry, literature, photography, newspaper articles and film. "I find it intriguing to work with the concept of "liminal Space”, a place where boundaries dissolve and we stand on the treshold, getting ourselves ready to move across the limits of what we were, into what we are to be,” she says. She found a story that had to be told, even if that meant telling a linear story, incorperating a narrator and every style of dance from folkdancing to modern dance.

With the exception of Native Americans, every American today can trace their lineage back to some other part of the world, and many still embrace bits and pieces of culture from the country of their forefathers, passed down through the generations. This is a story that touches upon issues relevant to everyone – historic or current – in America, Europe or the Middle East.

The life of an immigrant in the New World was often very hard, yet this story – as expressed through the art of Ballet Mink – is a moving and visual delight, told with a glint of humor in the eye and loving respect of all those who came before.

Margot Mink Colbert will be available for interviews from June 1st by appointment.
